Microsoft PL-300 Certification Preparation: Power BI Data Analyst

The Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification shows you can turn raw data into reliable reports that people actually use to make decisions. Over three days you work through the full Power BI lifecycle: connecting and cleaning data in Power Query, building a star schema, writing DAX measures, designing visuals, using Copilot, then publishing and securing content in the Power BI service. Every domain comes with hands-on labs and exam-style questions.

The exam

Exam PL-300, “Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst”, earns you the Power BI Data Analyst Associate certification. It runs for 100 minutes, may contain interactive components and requires a score of at least 700 out of 1,000; Microsoft notes that its exams usually have 40 to 60 questions. You book it through Pearson VUE, either at a test centre or online with a remote proctor, in English, French, Spanish, German and six other languages. Microsoft Learn can be opened during the exam, although the clock keeps running. The certification is valid for twelve months and renews free of charge through an online assessment on Microsoft Learn.

Preparation tips

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Is PL-300 still current in 2026?

Yes. Microsoft has announced no retirement and refreshed the skills measured on 20 April 2026, with minor tweaks to data connection, report storytelling and workspace management.

How many questions, and what score do I need?

Expect roughly 40 to 60 questions in 100 minutes. The minimum passing score is 700 out of 1,000.

Do I need coding skills for PL-300?

Not as a developer, but you do write DAX measures and need to read Power Query M. The course starts from the basics of both.

How does PL-300 compare with DP-600?

PL-300 targets analysts who build models and reports in Power BI. DP-600 is aimed at analytics engineers designing end-to-end solutions in Microsoft Fabric, and PL-300 is a sensible step before it.
