The exam
You take the exam online, remotely proctored through the PECB Exams app, or on paper with an authorized partner. It lasts three hours: 80 multiple-choice questions, open book (standard, course material and notes allowed). Seven domains: fundamental principles (15 questions), ISMS requirements (12), planning the implementation (18), implementation (14), monitoring and measurement (10), continual improvement (6), certification audit readiness (5). The pass mark is 70%, and online results are instant. The credential is valid for three years, provided you log CPD hours and pay the annual maintenance fee.
Preparation tips
Planning is the heaviest domain (18 questions), so be fluent in the chain from context to risk assessment to the Statement of Applicability
Open book is not unlimited time: tab the standard and course material so you can find any clause in seconds
Practice scenario questions, which usually ask for the best decision rather than a definition
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between ISO 27001 Lead Implementer and Lead Auditor?
Lead Implementer teaches you to design and deploy an ISMS. Lead Auditor teaches you to plan and run audits of an existing ISMS. Many professionals earn both, starting with the one that fits their current role.
Can I become a Lead Implementer with no experience?
Not straight away. Passing without experience gives you Provisional Implementer. Lead Implementer requires five years of professional experience, two of them in information security management, plus 300 hours of ISMS project work.
Is the exam available in languages other than English?
Yes. PECB offers it in many languages, including French, Arabic and Spanish, always as 80 multiple-choice questions in three hours.
What happens if I fail the exam?
The PECB offer includes one free retake within 12 months of your first attempt.
How long does the PECB credential last?
Three years. To keep it, you report continuing professional development hours and pay an annual maintenance fee.
