Part-time work (20 to 34 hours a week) and paid or unpaid internships can count
Without five years: pass and become an Associate of ISC2, with six years to build the experience
Target audience
CISOs and security directors
CIOs
Security managers and architects
Engineers, auditors, consultants and senior analysts
The exam
Every CISSP exam is adaptive: each answer shapes the difficulty of the next question, and the test ends between 100 and 150 items, within a three-hour limit. You sit it at an Pearson VUE test center approved by ISC2, in English, German, Chinese (set windows only), Spanish or Japanese. The pass mark is 700 out of 1,000. Once you pass, you have nine months to complete endorsement by an ISC2-certified member, then pay the annual maintenance fee (USD 135, or USD 50 as an Associate). You keep the credential by earning 120 CPE credits every three years.
Preparation tips
Answer as a risk manager, not a technician: the best option protects the organization and follows due process
Start with Domain 1 (16%) and your weakest domains, since the adaptive engine keeps probing your gaps
If English is not your first language, practice in English; there is no French exam and wording matters
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Is the CISSP exam available in French?
No. ISC2 offers CISSP in English, German, Chinese, Spanish and Japanese, and the Chinese version only opens during set windows. You can still prepare in French.
How many questions are on the CISSP exam?
Between 100 and 150, depending on how you answer, because the exam is adaptive. You get three hours and need 700 out of 1,000 to pass.
Can I take the CISSP without five years of experience?
Yes. If you pass, you become an Associate of ISC2 and have six years to reach the required five years of experience in at least two domains.
Which certifications waive one year of experience?
The list revised on April 1, 2026 includes CompTIA Security+, CySA+ and SecurityX, CISM, CCSP, SSCP and CCNA, among others. CEH is not on it. Check ISC2's current list before relying on a waiver.
How do I maintain my CISSP?
Earn 120 CPE credits over each three-year cycle (ISC2 suggests 40 a year) and pay an annual maintenance fee of USD 135.
